Queen Latifah, was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970, in Newark. Latifah was the second daughter born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most well-known for her political activistism, acting talents, and ability to rhyme. When she was eight years young an Muslim relative named her Latifah which means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah sang with the choir of the church of Shiloh in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She had her first public performance singing "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a musical production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mother was the catalyst and she kept in touch with the children and music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J. Mark the 45 King to invite her to perform at an event at the school.
